The Chamber’s International Trade Team helped Hyde Technology School students hone their language skills in an event designed to combat the dwindling numbers opting to study a foreign language at GCSE level.
The ‘Language and the World of Work’ event was organised by the International Trade Team to encourage more young people to learn a language and equip them for the world of work in an increasingly globalised economy.
There were eight workshops based around real-life applications of modern languages in the workplace and this also included a session run by Chamber member Fingershield Safety (UK).
The event was prompted by a recent report published by Lord Dearing which highlighted that in the last two years the proportion of students continuing to learn languages in state schools has plummeted from 80% to 50% and is still falling.
