Huntingtree Primary School Protect Pupils from Dangerous Doors

Huntingtree Primary SchoolAs well as managing the maintenance and upkeep of Huntingtree Primary School in Dudley, Mr. Steven Gray, the school’s Caretaker, is responsible for making sure that the school is free from potential hazards to both pupils and staff.

Having spoken to Steven recently, he told us what it is about Fingershield that made the school install over one hundred devices.

Steven has attended various meetings with the school’s insurance company who advised that unprotected doors are a serious hazard. Accordingly, the school’s Board of Governors wanted to address this problem, and so, Steven began searching for a door safety device that meets the specific needs of the school.

Given the high number of metal doors at the school, such as fire exit doors, Steven was looking for a product that can be used to protect both wooden and metal doors.

When asked what it is about the Fingershield device that caught his attention, Steven replied: “There has been a lot of touting in the press from companies offering door safety protection devices and we used to have one or two other products for the timber doors, but they were cheaper in quality and weren’t very effective. It was also important that we found a product that could be fitted to metal fire doors as well, which altogether made us choose Fingershield.”

Huntingtree Primary School Of the difference that Fingershield has made to school life, Steven said: “We certainly do have more peace of mind now. I have been looking for the past two years for a product that protects children from getting their fingers trapped in doors and, until I discovered Fingershield, I couldn’t find a device that covers both timber and metal doors.”

Mr. Andy Birch, our Door Safety Surveyor in the Birmingham and Dudley area, promptly visited Huntingtree Primary School when Steven requested a free Door Safety Risk Assessment Survey. Following the survey, Andy was asked to fit Fingershields to all of the metal doors in the school and, what is more, the Board of Governors has recently requested that more devices are fitted to protect the wooden doors as well.

Andy Birch joined Fingershield’s national network of Door Safety Surveyors in December 2001 and has always been a very hardworking member of the team. Of Andy’s dealings with the school, Steven commented: “Andy was excellent. He was very pleasant and caused absolutely no disruption whatsoever when he came to fit the Fingershields. In fact, Andy waited until pupil examinations had finished before he fitted the doors in that particular part of the school.”

As well as recommending Fingershield to carpenters and school surveyors alike, Steven has recommended Fingershield to a fellow school, Quarry Bank Primary School in Dudley, who have since installed both Fingershield and Rearshield devices, providing full protection to doors in the school.

In the feedback we received from Quarry Bank Primary School, Office Manager, Mrs. Judith Bradley, wrote: “Friendly, efficient, courteous, punctual – everything happened according to plan!”
